A Minimum of 29 US Citizens Have Sought Asylum in Australia Amid Trump's Second Term
Dozens of US nationals are seeking protection in Australia as their home country becomes increasingly divided and unstable politically throughout Donald Trump’s second presidency.

No fewer than 29 US citizens applied for protection status in the initial half-year since Trump's comeback to the executive office in January 2025, according to government figures.
The assistant director of a leading refugee aid organization, Jana Favero, commented that the organization had also seen an rise in the number of people from the America contacting its helplines for guidance on how to claim protection.
“Our organization is alarmed about the rising threats on individual liberties in the United States, and in particular the targeting of the LGBTIQ+ community,” Favero said.
The official data do not specify detailed causes for the requests, but to be accepted as a refugee in the country, an individual needs to demonstrate a “reasonable apprehension of targeting” due to their background, religion, origin, belonging to a distinct group or ideological stance.

The data reveals that refugee claims from US nationals have consistently grown since the president took office, even if beginning at a modest level.
Less than five individuals from the US sought refugee status between the spring months.
The figure of submissions increased to five individuals in late spring, seven people in the start of summer, and 14 in the summer month, culminating in a minimum of 29 and a up to thirty-eight lodgments over the first two quarters.
The exact number is uncertain because the authorities does not publish the number for times with fewer than five applications.
