Exploring Accra Cultural Week

Experiencing the showcases, installations and performances of this event, one sees how the finest art nourishes and constructs a country’s past and essence. The highlight was undoubtedly the artist's remarkable a profound exploration of ritual and time, which displayed his pioneering afrogallonism on full display: a concept that transforms water vessels into illusory creations, assemblages of yellow, brass and gold. In Clottey’s breathtaking exhibition, the entirety of the sensory and spiritual landscape of Jamestown are captured – especially in the enveloping Jamestown nshonaa piece. Within it, visitors are calmed by the audio of ocean surf with beach material underfoot, while beach huts, hanging fishing nets and representations of vessels pay homage to its spirited, generational seafaring tradition. But experiencing this gallery, it's hard to ignore the piles of cast-off garments that compromise the aesthetics and peace of the area.

Beyond the Centrepiece

Accra Cultural Week also features additional highlights. Inside an raw space at the local university, creator Sylvester exhibited On the Other Side of Languish, an emotionally powerful, minimalist presentation that included sculptures and canvases created in partnership with metalworkers.

Another key element is the competition for female artists for women artists of Ghanaian origin. It included the debut presentation of a 2024 laureate, whose work references personal family archives to create a artistic representation of life in post-independence Ghana.
