Bullish Celtic's manager shows no fear of the sack however supporters show anger following derby defeat.
Wilfried Nancy declared he had no concerns about the sack, maintaining, “I believe we are really close to a turnaround,” despite edging perilously close to the exit with a comprehensive defeat by their arch-rivals.
Another Meltdown Sees Old Firm Defeat
Celtic had led the visitors at the interval but a disastrous second period allowed the Gers to pull level on points with the current league title holders. The French coach, who was appointed from the MLS, has now been in charge for six losses in his last eight matches.
“We are together at the club,” insisted the manager.
Pressed on the speculation, Nancy replied: “That’s not my focus. I concentrate on working out methods to help my team to excel on details.
Fan Fury On Display
The fans voiced their fury – aimed at the dugout and directors – in their hundreds at full time. The hierarchy are thought to be considering to re-appoint Martin O’Neill, who enjoyed a successful caretaker period before Nancy was hired, if Nancy departs.
“Wins and losses [that leads to pressure]. That is the truth for the moment. However by saying this is the reality, I am not saying that I am giving up. Absolutely not. What I mean we are really close, extremely close to turn things around.”
Focus on the Details
The coach continues to cling to the fact his team play well for 45 minutes at a time. For instance, were it not for poor finishing they might have been more than 1-0 up. “I saw enough except the fact that we missed a second goal,” he said. “I know that we lost, but I have also to be fair.
“The standard we had at stages was exceptionally high. That happened. And I would not talk like that if it was untrue. That is the reason, when it comes to wins, I mentioned we've seen this before. That’s why I feel we are really close to getting it right. Right now: small things.”
“There were plenty of positives that we did, like today again. However it’s about performing for 90 minutes. My outlook would be different the same. That’s why I am a big believer the team can to turn things around.”
Opposition Reaction Stance
Rangers manager played down talk of a serious challenge despite what seemed like a statement victory. “Step by step, so we can really build up something here,” he said. “The confidence in the team is excellent.”
