The child of previous South African Leader Zuma has denied all charges to terrorism-related charges at the start of her legal proceedings in the coastal city of Durban.

The defendant, 43 years old, is being prosecuted over comments she posted on social media several years back during violent protests in South Africa that came after the apprehension of her dad.

A period of anarchy in various areas of the country in the summer of 2021, including looting and fire-setting, resulted in at least 300 killed and resulted in damage worth an approximate $2.8bn (2.2 billion pounds).

The defendant has been alleged of inciting this violence and faces charges of encouragement to commit terrorism and public violence.

Context of the Proceedings

The demonstrations were centered in the provinces of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal and followed the ex-leader's arrest for ignoring a court order to appear as a witness at an inquiry into claims of corruption while he was holding office.

The defendant has repeatedly denied the charges against her, with her attorney in the past labelling the government's evidence as insufficient.

She has also repeatedly stated the charges against her were an attempt to address political disputes with her dad after he established his own political party and ran against the ruling party.

This was supported by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which stated the case was an "abuse of power" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and familial harassment" against the previous head of state and his kin.

A small number of backers from her political organization, uMkhonto weSizwe, appeared outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her father and other organization officials attended the proceedings inside.

The defense has stated that the evidence presented by government lawyers is unconvincing and does not have concrete proof for a conviction.
