Schools in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for weapon-wielding factions

Weapon-carrying attackers have taken the life of an instructor and abducted at least 25 students in an raid targeting a girls' secondary school in north-western Nigeria, police reports indicate.

The gang of attackers invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the beginning of the work week, officials stated.

The assailants "engaged police personnel on duty in a firefight" before climbing over the boundary wall and taking the pupils captive from their hostel, according to a statement.

A school employee was lost their life while safeguarding the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now receiving treatment.

Observers recounted a considerable contingent of armed individuals, known locally as bandits, who arrived firing sporadically to generate terror.

Local residents disclosed to media that the armed men then led a group of female students into adjacent wilderness.

The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "extra specialized police forces, in coordination with armed forces and local protection units" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is underway in surrounding forests and believed flight corridors.

In the last several years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have become frequent targets for militant organizations, who routinely perform seizures to request monetary settlements or leverage deals with the government.

The assault in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency afflicting the area, resulting in households in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they expect and desire their daughters' safe return.

Protection challenge in the northern regions of Nigeria has intensified significantly in the last several months, with learning centers bearing the brunt of the unrest.
