Information Available Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were taken to medical facilities.

The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the events leading up to the shooting, stating they were standing when the gunfire started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with several in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
