Manchester United Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a major coup for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a major boost to the team's forward line. She has been highly reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing the German international coincides with a period when the club seem to be building momentum.
Their recent performances include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has brought additional business:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
