Outrage Surges as Former President Trump's Post on Director Rob Reiner Draws Widespread Backlash

Figures from both sides of the political divide and the entertainment world are uniting to condemn former President Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the shocking passing of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Controversial Online Statement

After the couple were found dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to social media to describe the deceased director as "tortured and struggling". The message, he claimed Reiner's death was "due to the hostility he provoked others through his massive, unyielding, and untreatable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".

Police Developments and Arrest

Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in relation to the incident. Reports indicate his bail was set at a substantial sum.

A Torrent of Condemnation from Public Figures

The response to Trump's post was immediate and scathing.

“What a vile and vile statement,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly criticized the statements. She pointed to prior rhetoric from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, asking, "Do you have no decency? Is it possible to get any worse?"

California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "This is a sick man."

Echoing this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a contemptible piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just lost it. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own demise because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."

Criticism from His Own Party

A number of Republican elected officials also expressed disapproval.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a family tragedy, not about politics or rivals". Greene also alluded to challenges with addiction and mental health some families face.

Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the circumstances. He publicly challenged others in his political party to justify the statements.

The Director's Legacy and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was consistently a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. In a previous conversation, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also warned about the dangers of autocracy if Trump return to power.

"There is authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democracy crumble around the world."

Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "absolute horror" and denounced political violence unequivocally following the shooting of another individual.

An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal

Providing a layer of historical irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had once shared the anecdote of the photo shoot, noting Trump's request for "special hairspray" as posing on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
