Over 36,000 Sudanese have evacuated since capture of El Fasher to paramilitary group, states UN agency
In excess of 36,000 people have escaped Sudan's Kordofan area eastern part of Darfur starting Saturday, according to the UN's migration agency.
The strategic central area connecting the country's Darfur areas and the Khartoum-Riverine region has over recent weeks become the recent fighting area in the extended civil war between the Sudanese armed forces and the paramilitary forces.
Substantial Displacement Statistics
An calculated 36,825 people evacuated from five areas in North Kordofan region between 26 October and 31 October, per data from the International Organization for Migration.
The people, most on foot, traveled to Tawila, a town west of El Fasher that is currently sheltering more than 652,000 evacuated individuals.
Increased Troop Concentration
Local inhabitants of North Kordofan on Monday noted a substantial rise in both RSF and army deployment across communities throughout the state.
Both military groups are contesting control of El Obeid, the North Kordofan provincial capital and a important strategic and command base that joins Darfur to Khartoum.
"Today, all our forces have converged on the Bara front here," commented an RSF member in a recently circulated video declaration.
Local Residents Report Safety Fears
A local inhabitant of Um Smeima, located west of El Obeid, reported that the quantity of RSF vehicles had grown substantially since the group's capture of El Fasher.
"We stopped going to our farms, concerned about clashes," the resident commented.
Another civilian, who sought confidentiality for security reasons, also indicated that "there has been a big increase in army vehicles and weapons west and south of El Obeid" over the previous fortnight.
World Concerns and Appeals
A senior UN official raised the alarm last week about "large-scale atrocities" and "race-driven revenge attacks" by RSF in Bara.
The official warned of patterns comparable to patterns in Darfur, where RSF combatants have been alleged to commit mass killings, sexual violence and abductions against specific ethnic communities.
The religious leader on Sunday appealed for an prompt truce and the creation of humanitarian corridors in Sudan, stating that attacks on civilians and impediments to humanitarian aid "are creating unacceptable suffering."
Sudan's diplomatic representative to Egypt on Sunday alleged RSF of committing war crimes in El Fasher and stated that the Sudanese government would not negotiate with the paramilitary group.
The ambassador further called on the global community to classify the group as a terrorist group.
