Overtake Mode & Active Aero - Understanding F1's New Regulatory Language

The 2026 Formula 1 cars are expected to be more compact, agile and eco-conscious relative to present-day cars.

The world of Formula 1 has introduced the simplified vocabulary that will be used to explain the technical complexities of its new 2026 rulebook.

The championship is implementing what is considered the largest technical shift in its illustrious history starting in 2026, featuring revised car and engine specifications and the compulsory introduction of eco-friendly fuels.

The revised engines, which retain the hybrid V6 layout, boast a greatly enhanced battery power, requiring major innovations in the cars' aerodynamics.

During grand prix events, drivers will carefully oversee battery power – sometimes even qualifying laps – to extract the best lap time.

Extensive fan consultation were carried out with a diverse audience, including long-time followers and newcomers, to determine which terminology would aid comprehension of the main elements of the 2026 changes.

The primary aim was to make a series of complex technical aspects of the competition as easy to grasp as possible for the global fanbase.

Consequently, older technical labels for some systems – such as "alphabetical mode names" for the active aerodynamics – have been discarded in favour of descriptive names that directly explain the actual function of the technology.

What's the New Technology?

The FIA states that competitors will have increased agency to make decisions regarding battery management, harvesting, and efficiency.

The new regulations mandate a set of functions that will be shown on TV overlays to aid the audience's understanding of the strategic duel.

  • Attack Mode: This supersedes the current DRS. It provides a burst of extra electrical energy available when a competitor is less than a second the vehicle in front to execute an overtake.
  • Power Mode: This is a manual battery discharge from the energy recovery system that can be utilized during attack or defence. It provides the pilot full engine and battery energy at the activation of a control.

Both of these strategic tools will have to be managed carefully, as the available electrical charge is capped.

  • Active Aerodynamics: Both the front and rear wings move automatically – spreading on the long straight sections for low aerodynamic resistance and higher speed, and sealing in the turns for peak grip.
  • Energy Harvesting: Cars can recharge the energy store with regenerative braking, or during throttle lift at the straight's end or in certain corners where only partial power is applied.

2026 Car Specifications

The vehicles for the new era will be reduced in size and weight compared to the 2025 spec, with a distance between axles cut by 200mm to 3,400mm, car width cut by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the lowest permissible weight decreased by 30kg.

Overall downforce is projected to decrease by approximately a significant margin, although constructors will inevitably claw this back as they develop their cars.

Drag has been reduced by 40%. The cars will feature adjustable aero systems – both wings will adjust on the straight sections to improve speed and increase straightline speed and revert into place for optimal grip in corners.

Tyres will keep 18-inch rims, but the tyres themselves will be reduced in width, by 25 millimetres on the front axle and 30 millimetres on the rear axle.

What's Changing in the Engines?

The revised hybrid units will have an approximate 50-50 split in power produced by the internal combustion engine and the electrical system, a rise from about 20% electrical in the current formula.

The ERS setup is made less complex through the elimination of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the sophisticated and pricey component that generated electricity from the turbocharger.

All vehicles will be required to run on 100% sustainable fuel, produced using plant-based materials or synthetic production methods.
