For much of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned within a psychic prison forged from the recollections of Vecna. The search for an escape route in episode 6 forces them to experience a life-altering moment from Henry's childhood—an event that potentially carries the secret to his downfall permanently.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft

When she finds Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a cave that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a viewing device found in Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.

In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy come across an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. It was a factor, but the act went deeper than a fight for life.

A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission

This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a warship into a realm later called the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the captain, who came back in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.

That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in Nevada. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to sell to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. This spy in the tunnel was that very thief.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is revealed about Brenner's work, the case would assuredly have some of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, causing the development of his psychic abilities—powers he would genetically impart to the test subjects under Brenner's care.

Alternatively, the box could have held strange particles that later made its way to the secret facility, where it maintains the stability of the parallel world. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy was transported in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he fights the whispers of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how the character Will was possessed by the shadow monster in the past.

A Weaponized Emotion

Henry's enduring terror linked to that memory demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. Even as he controls the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a showdown between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his greatest terrors to fortify himself.

This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. Crucially, Will now understands what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the ultimate battle ahead.
