As he approaches his half-decade plus one year at the helm, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his continued role with the club is fundamentally dependent to achieving success.

Reflecting on: Six Years in Charge

The former Arsenal captain assumed control on 20 December 2019 and promptly led the team to an cup win not long after. Yet, that early success remains his sole significant piece of silverware following the departure of Unai Emery.

“Yes,” Arteta responded upon being asked about staying beyond 2027. “However, it is about today. And a lot of things need to fall into place in the coming months as well to earn the right.”

Saturday night brings the landmark with a match versus Everton, the very same club Arsenal played just after his hiring was confirmed.

The Current Landscape

As chasing Manchester City set to face West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal face being knocked off first place in the Premier League before their own match begins. This potential shift despite Arteta managing a squad that has suffered more than a century of fitness issues since the start of last season.

Arteta is tied down by a year and a half left on the contract he inked in 2024, however, he knows that he must deliver promptly.

The Manager's Mandate

The manager expanded, emphasizing the ongoing need to validate his position. “I think a manager must deserve the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you talk here, how you enter the dressing room, the instructions you give.”

He added, expressing gratitude for the consistent faith from the hierarchy, yet identifying the team's buy-in as the key factor. “At the end, the key individuals are those players... Over this half-decade, I’ve seen just players with a standard of focus, willingness to improve and give their all to the team.”

Injury Concerns

The squad faces the upcoming game managing a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a strain that is anticipated to keep him out for the coming weeks.

Evolved Priorities

Regardless of the fitness woes and the immense scrutiny, Arteta believes the club's “priorities and messaging” are profoundly distinct from when he initially took over.

He pointed to the record-breaking achievements as proof they are close. “Consider the performances, all the historical marks we surpassed... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the level we are at.”

Arteta concluded, “That is a level that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And our ambition is to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
