The KPop Demon Hunters Series: Inspired by the Desire to Allow Female Characters Act Goofy On-Screen
You could call it the understatement of the year to claim that KPop Demon Hunters has captivated global audiences. Audiences cite various reasons for its immense success, including its catchy music, a vibrant fan community that produces its original dance routines and song versions, and a staggering volume of fanfiction.
As a woman, one of the most beloved aspects of KPop Demon Hunters is the relationship between Huntr/x's members Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. Despite the odds, they band together to defeat demons and save their world. While there is an complicated love story between Rumi and Jinu from Saja Boys, it never overshadows the heartwarming friendship among the three girls. They are loud, unapologetic and aren't afraid to appear silly.
The Intentional Goofiness of Huntr/x
As revealed by the director and writer, the humorous nature of Huntr/x was intentional. Speaking at a recent press conference alongside the cast and co-creator Chris Appelhans, Kang was asked about the essential components she wanted female viewers to see in the series.
"The most important is I wanted to see really silly women," Kang explained. "In my experience, we're often hesitant, especially in animation, to show female characters be really silly and become the most humorous character."
She shared a personal anecdote from previous projects where an ensemble cast included a single female lead. Teams would struggle in extended discussions about defining her distinctiveness. Kang suggested making the most comedic role female, but the idea was frequently rejected.
Empowerment In Humor
She confessed that this frustration over the reluctance to portray silly women directly shaped the creation of KPop Demon Hunters. She was set to make all three Huntr/x members silly.
"I firmly believe there's empowerment and strength in comedy," Kang emphasized. "It takes a ton of courage. To pitch jokes. To act goofy around others. And if you find a group that embrace you and your weirdest side, and they are just as weird with you, that is an ideal bond. I was eager to showcase that type of friendship between women."
This approach paid off: The series is packed with hilarious scenes, often expressed via vibrant visuals. Examples include the three girls chugging ramen with big, bulging eyes and falling over each other when encountering the handsome Saja Boys. These comedic elements make the characters unforgettable and are undoubtedly a major factor why fans are heavily invested and hoping for a follow-up project.
