Torrential Precipitation Exacerbate Conditions for Displaced Gazans, UN Caution
Heavy storms over the recent period have intensified the precarious circumstances of the vast number of displaced Palestinians in the region, as stated by relief agencies.
"Terrible" Weather Brings Grave Dangers
A representative described the recent storm as "horrendous", with precipitation so severe that around 15cm (6in) of water gathered on the terrain.
"Last night was truly horrendous for the families. The heavy rains were so intense... And the gusts were so strong," said the representative.
Authorities voice extreme anxiety that children living in temporary structures in wet clothing will contract hypothermia and additional illnesses.
Deaths and Significant Damage
Health authorities have stated that one baby has died from hypothermia and at least 11 other people have lost their lives in building collapses due to the storms.
Additional accounts suggest a higher death toll. Authorities stated that numerous residential buildings had fully given way and scores had been partly destroyed.
- Almost 55,000 families impacted by the weather.
- More than 40 emergency shelters submerged.
- Many people forced to find new shelter.
Relief Operations Deemed Not Enough
Agencies have escalated shipments of shelter, blankets and garments since the ceasefire began, but they emphasize there is remains not enough aid entering.
"We are working relentlessly to deliver that relief and to distribute it, but the magnitude of the requirements is so enormous that we are faced with thousands of individuals and children who are really enduring hardship nightly," stated one spokesperson.
Long-Term Issues and Agreement Terms
The next stage of the truce encompasses arrangements for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with post-war governance, the pullback of military forces, and other conditions.
Relief organizations have stressed the imperative for "greater and continuous relief to address urgent and ongoing requirements."
The conflict was sparked by an offensive in the autumn of 2023. Later campaigns have caused a high number of lives lost in the area, as per medical figures.
